Drilling operations

Drilling operations are a type of metalworking that consists in creating "blind" or through holes, applying threads and countersinking (increasing the diameter of the hole) in parts and products made of various materials.
For metal, the following types of drills are used:
  • spiral,
  • conical,
  • crowned ones,
  • stepwise.

Spiral drills are usually made of high-speed steel and retain sharpening well.
Taper drills expand the diameter of the hole as you go deeper. They allow you to drill a hole of the required diameter with a single tool, without replacing, say, smaller spiral drills with larger ones.
Crown drills are hollow cylinders with crown-shaped notches. They make it possible to create large holes in diameter – from 30 mm or more.
Step drills are the most modern version of the drilling tool. They are used only for metal sheets up to 2 mm thick. The steps of the drill cone correspond to each individual diameter, which makes this variety almost universal.
Drilling operations are often performed on these types of machines:
  • vertical drilling rigs,
  • horizontal drilling rigs,
  • radial drilling rigs,
  • on a magnetic sole.

Drilling and milling machines perform work on processing materials of various shapes, including incorrect ones, accurately calibrate the equipment, create holes of different diameters and add threads to them.
